Bhai dooj is observed on the last day of five-day Diwali festival.Bhai dooj is also called Bhau-Beej , Bhai Tika , Bhai Phota or Yama Dwitiya that is widely celebrated by nepal and India. Bhau beej is for Maharashtra state,bhai tiika is for nepal,and bhai phota is observed in Bengal state . It falls on the Dwitiya of Kartik Shukla Paksha.It is believed that the safety and security of women forms the basis behind the shaping of BhaiDooj as a national festival. Bhai dooj is somewhat resembles with Rakshabandhan. It Is a special bond between brother and sister. Every year, the festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated with great enthusiasm.
History behind the Bhai Duj / Bhaiya Duj, Bhai Dooj
According to the legends,yama (god of death)had come to see her sister despite being busy. On his arrival, she became happy because yama visted her after so long. She embraced and welcomed his brother so warmly. she put tilak on his forhead and prayed for the well being and long life of his brother . She made sweets and dishes to offer him. Lord yama , also bestow her sister with gift saying that all brothers should remember their sisters on this day and visit them if they can, and that, on this day, all sisters should pray for the happiness of their brothers .Yam gave a boon that if, brother and sister have a bath in Yamuna river on this day then they will receive salvation. That’s how , the ritual of bhai dooj festival got started on this day.
Second legend goes like this: When lord krishna killed demon narkasur. On that day He visted her sister Subhadra. She welcomed him , put tilak on his forehead and offered sweets to him.
Bhai Dooj Celebrations
On the day of bhai dooj, all the sisters eagerly wait for their brothers for celebrating bhai dooj.Sisters make a thaali for aarti. Then, they put tilak on their forehead,( tilak is made from vermillion and a few grains of raw rice). and tie roli on their hand. They perfom aarti and pray to lord yama for their long and happy healthy life. Brothers also bestow with gifts and goodies to their sisters.If the sister lives in a different town and is unable to visit herself,the tika along with a little roli and rice can be sent to the brother’s place. In her absence the money can be given to the sister-in-law to buy the necessary items on behalf of the sister. This day signifies the bond of love ,care and affection between brother and sister.Brother and sister celebrate their special friendship and make promises to be there for each other always.
